The Article 10 team were excited to hear about Windows taking on the mobile phone market, not long to wait before we can edit our PowerPoint presentations on the go...

To say that Windows has struggled in the consumer mobile phone market might be a bit of an understatement, but it seems that they are hitting back with a shift of focus, time and energy onto the mobile market to really tackle the ‘mobile professional’ world and take on RIM (Blackberry). David Weeks, product manager of Windows Mobile, stated that Microsoft are making mobile their number two priority, after Windows 7.

The shift in focus has seen the first release of an update in Windows Phone that was largely discredited by critics as the interface was still difficult to use, slow and not consumer-friendly. However, October 6 will see a new release of Windows Phone 6.5 software that has been totally revamped. Handset manufactures such as HTC and Toshiba have updated and radically changed the cosmetic appearance of the Windows operating system for the better. Web browsing is a lot easier and the general the phone is a lot more consumer-focused with access to Zune-like music player, alongside all the usual Windows software and easy access to Microsoft PowerPoint and other Office files.

The mobile focus of Microsoft is reinforced by the teaming up of Nokia and Microsoft. Microsoft looks to bring Office to Nokia phones by 2010 giving users access to Office products via a trusted handset provider that has a reputation for being typically easy-to-use.

Hopefully all the advancements will eventually lead to a more portable Office whereby business users and consumers alike can edit PowerPoint presentations and other Office files on the go.
